As someone who grew up in arguably the darkest blue area in the entire country, and spent the past 2 years living in some of the darkest red rural in the country, I can honestly say, it was more of a culture shock than traveling to undeveloped and third world countries. I felt so out of place, and my opinions were so out of step, I basically was forced to keep to myself except for the one professor I was able to befriend who was a centrist but very reasonable. Its not a stretch to say we’re living in two different realities.
