  • Many sportspeople are knighted (Dameified?). Service to community for regular folks also gets honours for those who stand out. At least in the wider commonwealth this has been true for all my life and my parents too. Look up Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Bobby Robson, etc. There’s a lot of orders of knights who are appointed solely at the discretion of the monarch in there but those specific orders are usually related to the functional aspects of the monarchy. I’m thinking specifically of the orders of the Garter and Thistle here. Generally, at least in Elizabeth’s reign the majority of honours I’ve seen have been for service to the community, arts, sports etc. and the person has genuinely been involved.

    Agree on the lordships though

  • It’s like that everywhere. The US is not an outlier. You need quality education systems in place as well or you can’t educate your future medical professionals. This is how democracy dies. Undereducated sickly populace will vote for whoever comes off the top rope with the funniest/angriest shit. We were sunk as soon as education funding cuts began worldwide. Early 90s in my country, probably similar elsewhere.

  • The one that got me is his recent interview on Shaqs podcast where he admitted he thinks fighting the best player on the other team so that they’d both get tossed was a net positive for his team. He talked about it like it was a legitimate basketball strategy and not what a loser would do.
