I’ve been in the ER for something that… well I won’t say, but it was of interest to the attending folks. Next thing I knew, there were two grad students in tow, eager to learn stuff that you only usually see in a textbook. I recall feeling strangely proud, and more proud than embarrassed (oddly enough). Plausible, but I think this outcome is one of many possible. Pressing on an individual’s psychological weak-spots can trigger a fight/flight/freeze/fawn reflex; your anecdotes are centered on the “fawn” response. I would caution the reader that, unless you know that person well, you really can’t predict which of the four you will get in this situation. If doing this you MUST be prepared for that fight reflex to kick in; they may get mouthy and/or physical. Social justice is important, but do take your opponent’s height, weight, build, and if they are armed into account, before proceeding.

To be completely fair, they’ve also been told their party is 100% on board with “state’s rights” the entire time. It’s dissonant as ever, but I can easily see people getting very confused by all this.

One of the terms is literally “L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space”. Which is to say that no alien civilization is expected to last forever and maybe not even for that long (barring any mitigating factors of course).

One thing that I observed is that the right wing had/has the more progressive campaign, from a technology and media use standpoint. The DNC, on the other hand, was still more or less using the same moves they had back in the 1990’s, relying on extinct concepts like the fairness doctrine, debate performance, and journalistic integrity of news outlets (fact-checks anyone?).

It’s not just the Overton Window that has moved: our information diet has completely changed too. To win at politics today, the entire landscape has shifted to propaganda, bombast, showmanship, clickbait, and leading the 24/7 news cycle by the nose. You must be louder and more interesting than the other guy. I think it’s possible to play that game ethically though, without disinformation, but what’s clear is that billionaire-owned media isn’t going to do it for you anymore.

It is so incredibly refreshing to hear someone with (however limited) power say what I’ve been seeing with the naked eye.

A four-hour drive through rural America last week showed me this: trump signs in the very poorest and the very richest yards, for miles and miles. There was the occasional Harris sign for obviously middle-class dwellings but not all.

All they need to do is fact-check his bullshit like we saw in the debate. A simple “reporters here at XYZ network could not substantiate the claims made by the ex-president, and found no evidence supporting them” would do nicely.

The key phrase to remember here is: Price Discrimination.

Stores already possess the technology to track anyone’s shopping experience through loyalty cards. The “discounts” you get are really just a tax on everyone that doesn’t participate, and the benefits to the company for having your data are worth potentially losing business from un-tracked customers. That’s how valuable your data is.

So why aren’t we seeing per-customer targeting? This is not to suggest that businesses are benign here, but rather, just cautious about outright per-customer discounts and other price manipulation. Custom coupons are kinda/sorta a part of this. IMO, the door is still wide-open to find ways palatable to the customer (and courts) while dialing everyone in.

In that context, all cameras do is make the system practically impossible to dodge. Considering how much stores value that kind of information, it makes sense they’d invest to capture 100% of their retail activity.

Agreed. I wonder how one controls for confirmation bias here? Maybe show another graph depicting screening rates, or a plot showing the introduction of newer and more accurate screening methodologies?
