As an US-Canadian dual citizen who grew up and was educated in Canada/Europe, I’m not gonna lie, I don’t get this argument. Canada as a confederation is 157 years old, we haven’t had the time to carve out a unifying cultural identity.

Ask any Canadian, hell ask yourself, “What is Canadian culture?” Rick Mercer has done so many street interview segments about this (we watched them during history class for funsies). It always boils down to “We’re different from/not as bad as America”, “We’re kind of like Europe” or “hockey”. The answers were also very different if you asked francophones in Quebec, francophones outside of Quebec, Acadians, or you know…Indigenous people.

This is such a Lemmy take. Ariana Grande is one of the biggest pop stars in entertainment, and Wicked is ONE OF THE BEST SELLING BROADWAY SHOWS EVER. Only behind the Lion King in total sales I think.

If a doll from Ariana’s dinky little Nickelodeon tv show (don’t come for me Victorious stans) is selling for this much, how much do you think her doll from Wicked is gonna sell for to the Broadway enthusiasts and Ariana stans?

I’m going to go against the grain here a little, and bring up race. Sorry to people tired of id pol, but please hear me out in good faith.

I know this is going to sound inconceivable to a lot of people on Lemmy, but there are still parts of the American voter base that cannot conceive of having a president that is black/mixed race AND a woman. They don’t care about fascism, they don’t care about policy, they care about the skin color and gender of their chosen leader.

Remember, Donald Trump rose as a direct response to the election of Obama.

We can pretend we live in a post-race, post-sexism society, but to pretend this wasn’t a factor when hate crimes have been on the rise for multiple minority groups says otherwise. All these people coming out of the woodwork post-election results to threaten women and black people says otherwise. Wayne Gretzky and his entire family was at Trump’s victory party in Mar-A-Lago, and most of the hockey fandom gave ZERO fucks.

I actually wonder if they would have done better if Tim Walz was first on the ticket instead of Harris.

Man…these legislators think about gay sex in more depth, variety, and detail than any gay person I have ever known.

The “giant Palestine protest non-voter” is a myth. Same as blaming third party voters. Voter turn out was actually comparable to 2020. These are insignificant compared to the demographic shifts observed this election cycle.

Also, it feels a bit icky to see so many people use protesting a genocide as a strawman “gotcha” for why the Democratic Party collapsed in an election cycle once again. Harris having 100 days to campaign because Biden didn’t drop out soon enough, the DNC being at odds behind closed doors, hell the RACISM/SEXISM problem America as a whole has (white people as a demographic still majorly voted for Trump across the board, while also citing there is no racism problem in America).

So New York kind of has something like this. They can run candidates under multiple parties. For example, they run the DNC candidates under the Democrats, but also under the Working Families Party, and both will count as a vote for them. My family members in New York always vote for the Dem candidate under the WFP because it helps them make quorum and also signals that they prefer the WFP endorsement over the DNC.

Here’s an article with a sample ballot from a district of NY. You can see Kamala and Trump under Dem/Repub, but also under WFP/Cons as candidates. Same with the senate.

The national numbers never show the breakdowns of which bubbles were actually filled in, just the totals. But I’m always curious as to what the ballot breakdown actually is.

It’s not a high horse, because I voted for Kamala Harris. But as someone who actually goes here, I knew this was going to be the exact outcome, because this high minded “vote for Trump to save democracy” is what got us in this mess in the first place. It happened in exactly like this 2016, and the Dem’s didn’t learn.

Sure, we can blame the electorate, I’m all for it. But saying that it’s SOLELY the electorate’s fault when the DNC has been trotting out milquetoast candidates one after the other is so disingenuous. Americans keep saying they don’t want two right wing candidates, but no one is listening.

Again, you are dismissing 45% of your brothers. People like you, people who probably think the same negative things as you about themselves.

Unironically young men need positive solidarity from each other. You are not biologically designed to be fascist. You’re lonely and self-hating by social engineering. And the more you believe that social engineering, the more the toxic men win.

45% of Gen Z men still voted Harris, there’s tonnes of you that aren’t alt-right.

Instead of dropping dead, it’s time you guys started reclaiming what it means to be a “man”. It’s not like shitty women don’t exist, but most women band together in times of need/stress. Men need to start doing that too.

I…then why are you telling Americans that we’re wrong for thinking the DNC ran a shit campaign?? Like, you’re right, we’re in for a FUCKED time starting January 2025, but did you really expect people to turn out on election night out of an existential threat? Does that happen where you live?

Harris didn’t lose because everyone voted for Trump, Harris lost because the Dem’s voter base felt so unheard by their own candidate regarding their issues that they stayed home, exactly as Bernie Sanders said. The numbers and voter stats are all there for people to read. Harris AND Trump got overall less votes than 2020, but Harris lost the Blue Wall from 2020. Hillary at least won the popular vote, Harris and the 2024 DNC don’t even have that.

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, voter turnout correlates to progressives getting in power. The conservatives always have a core base of ~20-30% of voters that will always show up (no really, look up historical voter numbers in your own country), and the DNC have really tried appealing to these people in the US instead of bringing out their own base!

It’s a flawed strategy because it’s shown over and over again that these core voters will always vote through their conservative party lines.
