This is getting too philosophical.

because Boeing or why?
I’m biased but have you tried !syncforlemmy@lemmy.world
You’re getting downvoted but my friend is a 5th grade school teacher in California and confirmed to me that for years now when her students get to 5th grade they can’t read or even sound out basic words and she’s required to keep passing them to middle school.
Teachers all over the US are saying kids can’t read. Combined with the fact that teachers have to strictly follow their curriculums which are not designed for these kids, that means American kids will continue to not develop literacy skills. IMO it’s a valid question to ask: what are we doing about that?
Great stuff! Disappointing that the article didn’t mention how they managed to get on the tarmac.
Hey, that’s my favorite System of a Down lyric!
All research and successful health policies show
That walking should be increased
And law enforcement decreased while abolishing
Mandatory minimum parking spots

Lol you’re not wrong it’s just funny that rather than upholding quality standards Google is injecting it straight into the top of your search results.
It’s hilariously bad that they don’t care it’s literally conflicting with itself. This came up for me yesterday:
Please no one tell them and let them drink their raw milk and get avian flu and perish.

Google Messages app already falls back to SMS automatically if RCS fails. SMS is not going anywhere.
I see you got your food science degree from Trump University.
Obligatory reminder that he didn’t win the popular vote.
But yes you’re spot on.
wow aren’t you just a ray of sunshine.
what does that have to do with deadnaming people?
I guess you’re the expert here since you Googled a condition & now you know everything there is to know about it, right?
let me break it down. over 12 years ago when I was diagnosed, among the better-known symptoms like mixing up numbers, “misremembering names” (especially those that start with the same letter/sound) was a frequently published symptom of dyscalculia (and dyslexia, FWIW):
fast forward to 2013, in the DSM-5 they changed the definition of dyslexia and dyscalculia, removed them as diagnoses and instead replaced them with a more general diagnosis: “Specific Learning Disorder”, which among other things now requires that a person is “unable to perform academically at a level appropriate to their intelligence and age.”
in my opinion, and this is just my non-professional opinion:
if I tell someone I have a “Specific Learning Disorder” they’ll generally have no idea what I’m talking about. it’s easier and feels more self-consistent to tell them the name of the condition I was diagnosed with, even if it’s outdated.
the new DSM-5 diagnosis doesn’t account for people like me who were able to excel academically despite difficulty with numbers and names. did I have to read numbers 10+ times to make sure I knew I had the right one? yes. do I still struggle immensely to do basic arithmetic in my head? absolutely. am I also a software engineer who sometimes has to work with numbers? yes. did I get straight A’s in all my math classes? yes. people with dyslexia and dyscalculia excel all the time by discovering and using their own coping mechanisms, so this diagnosis seems overly reductive to me.
again, I’m not a professional. is it possible that my symptoms which were previously attributed to dyscalculia are just a part of my ASD? sure. but I’m pretty sure if I said I have trouble remembering Elliot Page’s name because I’m autistic, people still wouldn’t know what I was talking about, and I’d have an even harder time explaining it. so there you go.
for real, I’m pro trans rights and I still sometimes accidentally deadname Elliot Page because I have dyscalculia. if you ban me for that aren’t you being ableist?
also yes context is very important.
if I say “when Caitlyn went by the name [X], and she used [Y] pronoun, [Z] thing happened to [Y]”, I assume I will still get banned for deadnaming even though I’m innocently adding clarity to a conversation.
to make things worse, if someone is trans and gender fluid, and I call them by a name or pronoun they used last time I knew about them, now I’ve committed a crime of which I had no knowledge.
this blanket condemnation of deadnaming is just dumb. it requires nuance.
And how is the LGBT+ movement doing today?
Hmm, let’s see… the ACLU reports 479 anti-LGBT bills currently being considered to be passed as laws in the U.S. in 2024.
Maybe, just maybe, it’s time to wake the fuck up and realize the current strategy is NOT 👏 FUCKING 👏 WORKING 👏
Wake up and smell the flowers, because they’re still growing on the fresh graves of my murdered trans friends.
You’re right, we should all stop watching George Carlin b/c he’s been dead since 2008. Nothing he says could be relevant anymore, right?
I don’t need you to care about my opinion. I need you to care about more members of the community than just yourself. Which I can see is impossible for you.
If you don’t give a shit what cishets think, then IMO you need to exit the fantasy world you live in and wake up to the real world where trans people are still getting fucking murdered…
This is what pisses me off about so many members of this community, you like to pretend we’ve already won and that cishets aren’t currently threatening to take over this country and reverse the policies we worked so hard to pass for the last 50 years!
Come back when you’re ready to have a productive conversation about the advancement of our collective rights, and not your selfish desire to feel good in public no matter what others say.
I never drew that line, you did for your strawman argument. Typical lib response tbh. I never said there are “acceptable queers” and “not acceptable queers”. I said we need to have standards for what is considered acceptable in the context of public parades.
Conservatives are willing to define “being trans near children” as a sex crime, mostly b/c of the lies and misconceptions they get told/reinforced by conservative politicians and pastors about LGBT+, would you agree?
And what do you think those politicians and pastors use as “evidence” that we are all sexual deviants? If you think images and photos of sexual behavior at Pride parades is not one of them, you’re mistaken. It’s a public display, and it’s easy for them to say “why aren’t these people classified as sex offenders for doing such heinous acts in public?”
I stated a simple fact: pride parades currently hurt our image. People in this thread can’t seem to accept that.
