Friend of mine took me to a kiddy or family matinee at her local theater on a Sunday because it was cheap. I never experienced anything like it. Moms were sitting in groups chatting at full volume, kids playing in seats and running up and down the aisles, yelling to each other. Sheer pandemonium - the movie was strictly an afterthought, hardly anybody was paying attention to it. In fact I don’t even remember what it was lol.

When I was a kid I didn’t know the word “Matinee” so I would always misread it as “Manatee”, which turned this strip into a really weird non-sequitor.

Same! I’m somehow pleasantly surprised that someone else had the identical experience!

I’m guessing the kids were rowdy and didn’t pay attention at the theater. Maybe she wants a VCR so they don’t need to be in a theatre full of kids again?

Picture a dark room full of people where you’re supposed to sit quietly otherwise they’re mad at you. Now imagine taking a wrecking ball of a child into that room. It’s your responsibility to keep them sitting quietly. And failing that, to keep them from bothering everyone else.

Ha ha. Right around then my folks got a video disc player. Not a laser disc player. These read the disc with a stylus. Like a record player! If anything, it’s even MORE impressive than using a laser. …doesn’t work as well, though.
