The Boost for Reddit app still worked for a while after the big shutdown with workarounds, like creating a mod account or using revanced.
Not anymore, as of today, the Boost for Reddit app is completely 100% dead now.
Goodbye reddit forever, hello lemmy
Edit: Working again
Reddit did some change in the API that breaks many apps. As far as I know they are aware of the issue and will fix it. More info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/redditdev/comments/1d3spoc/error_getting_submitted_with_mobile_useragent/
I like lemmy but reddit is still difficult to replace due to lack of content and active communities. But I ain’t using the official app so I guess here we are.
You get used to it. Sorting by New and challenging yourself to kick off conversations helps.
I’d also point out that less content has become a good thing for me.
Less endless doom scrolling, more contributing to discussions and touching grass.
The thing is I use reddit mostly for fun stuff. I took out a lot of the political stuff that was getting me down. There’s not nearly as many niche cute cat subs or active hobbyist game subs on lemmy.
I’ve been on lemmy like 2 years. I like it but I wouldn’t say I’ve gotten used to it.
I discovered Lemmy today thanks to Boost lol
Welcome :)
Its getting better… you’ll be a +1 the activity and who wants bot or toxic activity anyway. Oh and the mods are generally much nicer here
On this instance anyway.
I still use reddit when I’m looking for very specific information, because reddit still is an amazing database of content/info. Many of my searches kinda end up on reddit that way. But I don’t post there anymore and I block all ads. So… I’m still using it but providing nothing in return. I can live with that.
It’s different for everyone, but for me it was just doom scrolling and not so much engaging with specific communites, so actually there really wasn’t a need to replace anything. I just don’t do it anymore and have more time for my hobbies now.
Same. I’m looking around at the KBin instance and it’s in bad shape, some of the communities are in. The admin is MIA due to IRL issues with health so he can’t be around to help. Moderators are abandoning already weakened communities that are now stuffed with bots and spam content.
The only real lively community is over in Lemmy’s instances. But, the Fediverse still yet has a long ways to go, it needs more maturity as an alternative and needs more time to gather membership that’ll hopefully be comparable to reddit’s but not in quantity but quality.
The fediverse looks a lot different from a lemmy server than it does from Kbin, fyi. There’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t get federated properly or in a reasonable time period, leading to fewer visible posts and discussions that look a lot emptier than they actually are.
You’re saying Kbin has the problem right?
I misread your title and thought you were saying that the Boost for Lemmy app was now dead. I’m glad I was mistaken.
I was like: “huh? But I’m using Boost right now!”
Same! LOL
There’s an incoming patch from revanced that will fix a few of the reddit clients including boost. Check revanced manager for new patches in the next few hours and you can patch boost for reddit and get it working again.
The only 3rd party reddit app I know that is still free is RedReader. Might be others too.
Sucks they refuse to let up on the API ban but it’s cool, we needed to get off reddit anyway.
My doom scrolling is way down over the past year.
I feel like Lemmy is not very active though, unfortunately. Or maybe I’m on the wrong Lemmy and not subscribed to enough communities or whatever they call sublemmies.
Reddit been dead for awhile, homie. Welcome.
I bought Boost for Lemmy on day 1 and come once in a while but let’s be honest people haven’t migrated off Reddit (and likely never will ) so outside of a few very specific subs there is barely anything for me to read over here…
It’s very tech focused over here, but that makes a lot of sense when you consider only tech aligned people can figure out how to get it all working as it is.
I kinda like the fact that it’s only tech savvy people on here tbh. Kinda like it used to be back in the day, before everyone in the world and their cousin figured out how to get online.
Normaloids ruined the internet. It’s nice to have a niche little corner of the web that they don’t know about yet so they can’t come and spoil it (yet) with all their endless pointless bickering and recycled political garbage reposting. Long live the 90s web 2.0 revival 😛
That’s a really good way of looking at it actually and I agree. The community is kind of filtered by only people who care enough to leave reddit, but also I think there is an aspect that we’re trying to escape the consequences of the karma system on posting/commenting behaviour.
I’ve always thought that having accounts that showed your total number of upvotes incentivises posting the same in-jokes endlessly. Bot accounts with high karma can even be sold to people who care about having a high karma account.
Known about lemmy for a while since the API protests, but finally took the chance to actually make an account due to this. I assume there will be a patch for this on revanced but meh
Welcome! Lemmy is a pretty fun place.
We got authentic weirdos unlike them Reddit fake bot weirdos.
yeah.
weirdos like me!
there are dozens of us
Who you calling weirdo, nerd?
Us.
Y’know I tried using boost for lemmy since that’s what I used for reddit, then I noticed how jam packed full of ads it is (just like reddit).
Jerboa has a lot of the same features and is completely ad free
After having used Boost for Reddit for so long I was happy to cough up a bit of money to get Boost for Lemmy to not have any ads. Jerboa was great for a free app, but for me the user experience felt free. I haven’t used it since BfL came out so not sure if it’s improved since then.
Hey I get that. I was like that myself originally. But after using jerboa I actually like it more. No hate towards anyone who uses boost or sync or whatever. I just like the feel of it.
And don’t get me wrong, jerboa has its own issues. One of the biggest being a lack of thumbnail protocol for large images or not being able to unblock communities/users without going to the full website but for a free app without ads it’s pretty nice.
Did the same, if I’m gonna make the switch then I might as well stick to what I’m used to anyhow
It appears they’re now blacklisting user-agents with “android” in them, people are putting out revanced patches for different clients.
I wonder whether reddit will kill the free API access next.
So this was a screw up on reddit’s end and also broke their official app for some people. They seem to have rolled that change back as of this morning. My revanced copy of baconreader works again
It’s back 🎉🥳
Hah and I thought my modded subreddit isn’t active enough so I lose the privilege. I have been thinking about creating a new one so this is a nice surprise.
Seems to be the real cause. I tried the official app for shits and giggles, can’t even log in. So yeah they fucked up pretty hard.
It’s back now.
Works again this morning
Stealth for Reddit available on F-droid still works, and the only app I used for Reddit after the api wars due to no need for an account to have a custom feed and allowing local saves that posts or comments. Accountless is my favorite approach to stuff like reddit or YouTube.
